Orthodontic Problems to Look for in Children

November 26th, 2018

The American Association of Orthodontists recommends that all children have a check-up with an orthodontist by age 7.  While your child's teeth may appear to be straight, there could be a problem that only an orthodontist can detect. Dr. Valeri can spot severe and subtle problems with jaw growth and emerging teeth while some baby teeth are still present.

It is importance to check for the following:

Anterior Crossbite: An upper front tooth is behind a lower front tooth. This can lead to tooth wear and jaw issues if not corrected.

Posterior Crossbite: An upper back tooth is on the inside of a lower back tooth. This can lead to tooth wear and jaw issues if not correct.

Crowding: Not enough room for all the teeth. This could potentially lead to impaction or extraction of teeth.

Open Bite: Front or back teeth do not touch or overlap. This can lead to eating or chewing issues.

Protrusion: Front teeth are sticking too far forward. This could lead to severe trauma and fracturing of teeth.

Ectopic Eruption: Adult teeth coming in wrong.  This could potentially damage other adult teeth or lead to tooth loss.

Complete Class III/Underbite: Lower jaw and teeth completely in front of Upper jaw. This could lead to severe jaw issues and the need for jaw surgery if not corrected.

Diastema: Severe Spacing.

Oral Habits: Unbreakable habits such as thumb sucking or tongue thrust. These can cause damage to teeth and jaws.

While many of these orthodontic problems require early treatment, a check-up may reveal that your child's bite is fine and no early treatment is needed.
